Mutations in Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) are responsible for a familial form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS). It has been proposed that oxidative stress and abnormal metal homeostasis contribute to death of motor neurons in this disease.
