The gene product responsible for autosomal recessive juvenile Parkinsonism, Parkin, has been observed to have ubiquitin ligase activity. This finding has changed the direction of studies on Parkinson's disease by suggesting that abnormal protein turnover might be involved in its pathogenesis.
