BACKGROUND: Carvajal syndrome is a familial cardiocutaneous syndrome consisting of woolly hair, palmoplantar keratoderma, and heart disease. It is caused by a recessive deletion mutation in desmoplakin, an intracellular protein that links desmosomal adhesion molecules to intermediate filaments of the cytoskeleton.
