Kinetic, EPR, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis of Desulfovibrio fructosovorans [NiFe] hydrogenase mutants targeted to Glu-25 indicated that this amino acid participates in proton transfer between the active site and the protein surface during the catalytic cycle.
