A hallmark of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is their dynamic ability to assemble and disassemble contractile proteins into sarcomeric units depending upon their phenotypic state. This phenotypic plasticity plays an important role during vascular development and in obstructive vascular disease.
