Studies in mice have shown that immunity to malaria sporozoites is mediated primarily by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) specific for epitopes within the circumsporozoite (CS) protein. Humans, however, had never been shown to generate CTL against any malaria or other parasite protein.
