Deinococcus radiodurans exhibits an extraordinary ability to withstand the lethal and mutagenic effects of DNA damaging agents, particularly, ionizing radiation. Available evidence indicates that efficient repair of DNA damage and protection of the chromosomal structure are mainly responsible for the radioresistance.
