Nitric oxide (NO) is a key signaling and defense molecule in biological systems. The bactericidal effects of NO produced, for example, by macrophages are resisted by various bacterial NO-detoxifying enzymes, the best understood being the flavohemoglobins exemplified by Escherichia coli Hmp.
