Despite its diminishing efficacy because of increased resistance, chloroquine remains the primary antimalarial agent in many endemic areas. Evidence is mounting that point mutations on the Pfcrt and possibly the Pfmdr1 genes are conferring plasmodial resistance to chloroquine.
