OBJECTIVES: Factors associated with decreased plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentration, or hypoalphalipoproteinemia, include androgenic steroids and mutations in APOA1, encoding apolipoprotein (apo) A-I, the main structural protein of HDL.
