Leishmania promastigotes express an abundant cell surface glycoconjugate, lipophosphoglycan (LPG). LPG contains a polymer of the disaccharide-phosphate repeat unit Galbeta1,4Manalpha1-PO4, shared by other developmentally regulated molecules implicated in parasite virulence.
