Although in Gilbert's syndrome (GS), bilirubin glucuronidation is impaired due to an extra TA in the TATA box of the promoter of the gene for bilirubin UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1 (UGT1A1), many GS homozygotes lack unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia.
