Nicotine acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia because the prevalence of smoking among schizophrenic patients is extraordinarily high, and nicotine has been demonstrated to improve some psychophysiological dysfunction in schizophrenics.
