The proteoglycan thrombomodulin has been shown to be involved, via its chondroitin-sulfate moiety, in the cytoadhesion of chondroitin-4-sulfate-binding-Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes to endothelial cells and syncytiotrophoblasts.
