Rhesus monkey vastus lateralis muscle was examined histologically for age-associated electron transport system (ETS) abnormalities: fibers lacking cytochrome c oxidase activity (COX(-)) and/or exhibiting succinate dehydrogenase hyperreactivity (SDH(++)).
