Molecular genetics, biochemistry, immunology and morphology, are being applied in a coordinated fashion to unveil the molecular basis of the mitochondrial encephalomyopathies. Mutations of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) have been found in well characterized clinical groups of these disorders.
