BACKGROUND: Well-defined histopathologic criteria exist to distinguish actinic keratosis (AK) from superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC). A similar morphology of downwardly budding dysplastic keratinocytes may occur in both entities, creating potential for errors in diagnosis.
