Herpes simplex virus (HSV) isolates were characterized from 8 AIDS patients in whom acyclovir and foscarnet therapy sequentially failed. The 6 postacyclovir (prefoscarnet) HSV isolates were resistant to acyclovir and susceptible to foscarnet.
