Severe hypertension and cerebrovascular diseases develop in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). Cortical neurons from SHRSP are more vulnerable than those from Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) to the effects of nitric oxide (NO)- and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-mediated neurotoxic agents.
