The tripeptide glutathione plays a pivotal role in the maintenance of the thiol redox state of the cell and for the detoxification of reactive oxygen species. Glutathione is synthesized in two consecutive reactions by y-glutamylcysteine synthetase (gamma-GCS) and glutathione synthetase, respectively.
