The major surface glycoprotein (MSG) is an abundant, immunodominant protein on the surface of the opportunistic pathogen Pneumocystis carinii. The current study identified two novel variant MSG (vMSG) gene families in rat P. carinii that are closely related to but distinct from MSG.
