Osteoblast cells, recruited from mesenchymal precursors, initiate the final phase of bone remodeling by secreting the protein components of the bone matrix. Upon completion of remodeling, some of these osteoblasts may further differentiate, giving rise to matrix-embedded osteocytes and bone lining cells.
