CD8+ T lymphocytes are present in the vaginal epithelium and submucosa of women and female rhesus macaques. Antiviral cytotoxic T lymphocyte precursors were detected in the vaginal intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) population of SIV-infected monkeys.
