Mutants of a diaminopimelic acid (Dap)-requiring strain of Escherichia coli were isolated which failed to grow on media in which Dap was replaced by the cell wall murein tripeptide, L-alanyl-gamma-D-glutamyl-mesodiaminopimelate.
