Yeast cells lacking UDP-Glc pyrophosphorylase (UGPase) encoded by UGPI are not viable. Two strategies were developed to drastically reduce the intracellular concentration of UDP-Glc in order to study the consequences of this metabolic engineering on physiology and morphology.
