Sulfa drugs are widely used in the treatment and prophylaxis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. The nucleotide sequences of the sulfa target enzyme, dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), differed substantially in human-, rat-, and mouse-derived P. carinii.
