BACKGROUND: Recently we showed that antinuclear autoantibodies complexed to nucleosomes can bind to heparan sulphate (HS) in the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) via the histone part of the nucleosome. Histones have been identified in glomerular deposits in human and murine lupus nephritis.
