Phaeochromocytomas usually occur sporadically but may also be a feature of three autosomal dominantly inherited cancer syndromes, multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL), and, very rarely, type 1 neurofibromatosis.
