Most magnocellular hypothalamic neurons synthesize the precursor for either vasopressin (AVP) or oxytocin (OT). The AVP precursor is cleaved to give AVP, AVP-associated neurophysin (AVP-NP) and a glycopeptide (GP), whereas the OT precursor gives OT and OT-NP.
