11 beta-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11 beta-OHSD) catalyzes the interconversion of cortisol and cortisone. This activity is postulated to protect the Type I (mineralocorticoid) receptor from excessive concentrations of cortisol, allowing aldosterone to function as a mineralocorticoid.
