Stimulation of endothelial cells by cytokines and bacterial lipopolysaccharide leads to activation of the transcription factor NF-kappa B. NF-kappa B in turn regulates the expression of several genes involved in the inflammatory reaction, including cell adhesion molecules, interleukins, and transcription factors.
