Epidemiological data suggest that the ability to invade the intestinal epithelium of mammals is an essential virulence determinant of Yersinia enterocolitica. The chromosomally encoded Y. enterocolitica 8081v invasion gene, inv, was disrupted to assess its role in pathogenesis.
