The haemolysin of Serratia marcescens (ShIA) is translocated through the cytoplasmic membrane by the signal peptide-dependent export apparatus. Translocation across the outer membrane (secretion) is mediated by the ShIB protein. Only the secreted form of ShIA is haemolytic.
