Plants and the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe synthesize small cadmium-binding peptides, called phytochelatins, in response to cadmium. Derived from glutathione (GSH: gamma-Glu-Cys-Gly), they have the general structure (gamma-Glu-Cys)nGly, where n is 2-11.
