Uncoupling protein (UCP) is essential to brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis and, hence, to cold adaptation and energy balance. The sympathetic nervous system, via norepinephrine and cAMP, and thyroid hormone seem to be the major regulators of UCP expression.
