Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent zymogen of a serine protease that inhibits blood coagulation by proteolytic inactivation of factors Va and VIIIa. Individuals with protein C deficiency are at risk for thrombophlebitis, deep-vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism.
