Rat chromaffin cells display phenotypic plasticity postnatally. In the presence of glucocorticoids, they retain a chromaffin cell phenotype, whilst in the presence of nerve growth factor and the absence of glucocorticoids they adopt a sympathetic neuronal phenotype.
