BACKGROUND: Neonatal microcytosis may reveal complex hemoglobinopathy combinations requiring molecular clarification. OBSERVATION: We describe a neonate with homozygous HbE coinherited with α-thalassemia (-3.7 kb deletion) and Hb Constant Spring on the other allele.
