BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (CD), caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is a neglected tropical illness that affects 6-7 million individuals worldwide. CD may progress to chronic cardiac (CARD), digestive (DIG), or cardio-digestive (CARD/DIG) forms.
