Limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs), located in the basal layer of the limbal epithelium, rarely proliferate under normal conditions. Upon proliferation, LESCs give rise to early transient amplifying (eTA) cells, which are thought to be morphologically and phenotypically indistinguishable from LESCs.
