CONTEXT.—: Differentiating polycythemia vera from other causes of erythrocytosis is a diagnostic challenge. Although most patients with polycythemia vera have Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) mutations, extensive testing is impractical because this is an uncommon cause of erythrocytosis.
