BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number is associated with tumor activity and carcinogenesis. This study was undertaken to investigate mtDNA copy number in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) tissues and to evaluate the risk of PTC development.
