Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea is responsible for approximately a third of the cases of secondary amenorrhea. The condition is a result of disturbances in gonadotropin-releasing hormone pulsatile secretion at the level of the hypothalamus, which in turn disrupts gonadotropin secretion.
