BACKGROUND: Small non-coding microRNAs (miRNAs) are important modulators at post-transcriptional levels. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in miRNA genes can alter the secondary structure of pre-miRNA to either impair or promote the miRNA maturation processes.
