Structurally abnormal Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1) is considered one of the causes of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The misfolding and neurotoxic aggregation of SOD1 can be induced by mutations, metal deficiency, and post-translational modification.
