Kidneys are key regulators of phosphate homeostasis. Biallelic mutations of the renal Na+/phosphate cotransporter SLC34A1/NaPi-IIa cause idiopathic infantile hypercalcemia, whereas monoallelic mutations were frequently noted in adults with kidney stones.
