Acral and mucosal melanomas arise from sun-protected sites, disproportionately impact darker-skinned individuals, and exact higher mortality than common types of cutaneous melanoma. Genetically, acral and mucosal melanomas harbor more alterations of KIT than typical cutaneous melanomas.
