Most uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) express type-1 fimbriae (T1F), a key virulence factor for urinary tract infection (UTI) in mice. Evidence that conclusively associates this pilus with uropathogenesis in humans has, however, been difficult to obtain.
