2-Phosphinomethylmalate synthase (PMMS) from Streptomyces hygroscopicus catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of the herbicide bialophos using 3-phosphinopyruvic acid and acetyl coenzyme A as substrates to form 2-phosphinomethylmalic acid and coenzyme A.
