Two-component signal transduction systems (TCSTS) are abundant among prokaryotes and regulate important functions, including drug resistance and virulence. The Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, which causes the severe infectious disease melioidosis, encodes 136 putative TCSTS components.
